Frequently Asked Questions about incentives for air-conditioning upgrades

Learn how you can benefit from accessing the NSW Government’s Energy Savings Scheme (ESS)

  • 1. Are there any incentives available for air conditioning upgrades in NSW?

Yes. Air Conditioning unit replacements or installations are eligible for incentives through the NSW Government’s Energy Savings Scheme (ESS), aimed at incentivising energy savings practices in households and small businesses. The financial returns vary depending on the energy savings achieved, which will be impacted by the equipment model and location of the upgrade. The incentives are generated in the form of Energy Savings Certificates (ESCs), which we sell on your behalf in the energy market to generate the financial incentive.

  • 2. What are the eligibility criteria for accessing energy efficiency incentives?

Incentives are available when the installation meet all of these:

    1) A new Air Conditioning System is installed and/or a new system is replacing an old less efficient one.

    2) The system is installed in a household or in a small business

    3) The system is installed in NSW.

  • 3. I am an installer who tried the scheme before, and it was not worth it. Is this scheme method the same as the one offered 4-5 years ago?

Luckily, the requirements for this current scheme are much simpler, with far more products eligible for the incentive. Any energy efficient ducted or non-ducted system (up to 65kW) is eligible, with flexibility regarding how the incentive is distributed.

Further, there is a new scheme that provides additional incentives to ESCs for Air Conditioning installations – the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS). We can help you access this additional incentive with no extra work from your side. To understand more, please click here.

  • 4. How does the scheme works and how it benefits my business?

We provide a comprehensive list of eligible brands and models and the incentive value for each model determined by the postcode of your customer.

The scheme is divided into three categories based on postcodes Hot, Average and Cold with the best incentives available in Cold areas.

As an installer or solution provider, you can negotiate the incentive amount that you will pass on directly with your customers. This way, you can increase your on installations while offering better deals to your clients at the same time.

  • 5. How do I get paid?

If you are a household or small business, your incentive will be included as an upfront discount from the installer – all you have to do is sign the documents presented to you on the day of install.

If you are an installer, we will transfer the incentive amount as soon as the claim is validated by our expert compliance team.
